homemade deodorant: check it off my list

Today Jill is Blissfully domestic

So, maybe not everyone would be as excited as I am to say that I have made my own deodorant. It's been on my mind for months now every since I read this post over at Angry Chicken. I knew that I just had to try my hand at melting shea and cocoa butters and mixing in some amazing essential oils to create my very own, aluminum-free, perfume-free underarm cream.

I took Amy's advice and held a I'm Not a Dirty Hippie Party and split the supplies with a friend. It has to be a good friend. You can't just invite anyone over to make jars of cream that you know full well will be used on your underarms. Plus, since the jars apparently last for months, you will be smelling exactly like your friend well into the Fall.

We had a lovely afternoon mixing and measuring while our five children ran around enjoying the cool breeze of yet another cloudy June day. The process was simple and involved lots of melting, stirring and sniffing (a highly scientific process that is used to gauge the perfect ratio of essential oils to butters). In the end, it was a perfect mixture of grapefruit, lavender and peppermint that gave our deodorant it's signature quality (this is my favorite blend of essential oils and I have been using it since last year to make my own room spray).

Today was day one of using my homemade deodorant and so far, so good. I will be sure to keep you all posted as to how it is holding up in a few weeks. That is for those of you who care enough to read about my thrilling experience with my homemade deodorant.

Well call me odd but I would love to read more about your homemade deodorant! It is something I have been thinking of for a while too, after we are done with our stockpile! And just for the record, other bloggers have written about and posted photos on making their own sanitary pads. I think deodorant is not so bad, eh? :)

Stephanie I totally agree. That's why I wanted to post it here. I know our Blessed Nest crowd would love it. I like the idea of making sanitary pads. I just need more time in the day. Maybe making organic items for woman's needs will be a big home school project someday for me. Think of the possibilities of learning!

I was very excited to discover that coconut oil has a spf of 8! I mix in some essential oils of citronella, lemon grass, lavender and eucalyptus and I smell divine while keeping bugs and sunburn away! (at a fraction of the cost, money or eco)
The other stuff... uh, until I buy up every last Adidas antiperspirant (the only one I can find without aluminum), I am going to be a hard sell for embracing my wetness.
I have no comment about the other stuff. I'm just not that green yet.
But if anyone wants free scraps of our organic cotton French-loop terry to give it a try on your own panties, just pay for the shipping and I'll send ya a lifetime supply! (seriously... I have BOXES of it that I simply can't throw away)

hehehe Heather...I understand..at first the thought of making my own pads made me cringe but I read too many crunchy blogs that write with conviction. They have almost swayed me to the total green side. Almost? Also, it is kinda like the diaper dilemma...all those pads in the earth make me almost feel as sick as making them myself. I'll have to try Adidas antiperspirant without Aluminum because all the other natural brands make me feel a bit too natural. I do want to try making my own cream deodorant.
