Not sure how fun and exciting, but after raising 10 children, I know that bedtime can a real problem, after letting is slacken during the summer. We always started pushing bedtime forward by about 10 minuets each night, several weeks before school was due to start again.
New school supplies - this always gets the kids in the mood. Letting them put name labels on them, and picking out new backpacks and lunchboxes. This got the juices flowing:-)

To get ready for school this year we are letting our daughter earn some independence by letting her walk a short distance from school to meet me. We figure every few months we will go a tad further. She was excited to start knowing she could be like the older kids :-)
